a nod to my Facebook Navy submarine friends that served on one of the submarines. the 41 For Freedom were Fleet Balistic Missile Submarines of 5 different Classes of Submarines  of the U.S. Navy. Those Submarines were The George Washington 

The Ethan Allen Class
The Lafayette class
The James Madison Class
and The Benjamin Franklin Class

  2. Sandee,I remember when the US Navy coined the term 41 for freedom in 1960 because they already had planes for the boats as a deterent to the Soviets during the cold war.
